Jacaranda, Carbis Bay
This bespoke kitchen at Jacaranda in Carbis Bay was built around light, natural oak, chosen to sit comfortably in a home so close to the sea at St Ives.
As with every kitchen we design and build, the doors and panels are hand made rather than bought in. Each is built from 22mm MR MDF, lipped in solid oak at every edge and veneered on both sides in crown cut European oak, book matched along the vertical grain so the figuring runs continuously across each run. Rather than an applied handle, every door and drawer is finished with a routed J-Pull, keeping the fronts clean and uninterrupted.
Cabinet carcasses are built in Egger's Light Winchester Oak, a soft, natural tone that keeps the whole kitchen feeling warm and cohesive rather than introducing a second, competing wood tone behind the doors. A full height larder anchors one end of the run, built in oak veneered construction with a routed channel for lighting set 75mm back from the cabinet front, so the light washes down the inside of the unit rather than glaring out. Inside, three dovetail jointed drawer boxes with scalloped internal handles keep dry goods organised, alongside door hung spice racks that make use of space that would otherwise sit empty.
The worktop is Duke Stone's Coastal Range in Lamorna, a colour named for the cove near Penzance, run across 9.3 square metres with a matching upstand and drainage grooves worked in around the sink and hob. Duke Stone template, manufacture and fit every worktop themselves.
At the sink, a Blanco SilGranit sink in Etagon Soft White is paired with an Abode Prothia tap in brushed brass, with its own boiling water tank fitted alongside for instant hot water. Cooking is handled by a Samsung suite: a Dual Cook Flex oven with Natural Steam and a combination microwave, paired with an Elica NikolaTesla induction hob that vents through a low level, under floor extraction duct rather than an overhead hood, so the sightlines above the worktop stay completely clear. A Samsung fridge freezer, Samsung dishwasher and integrated wine fridge complete the appliance run, alongside a corner pull out and a two compartment eco bin with a dedicated food waste drawer.
The result is a warm, light filled oak kitchen built for daily use, with a hardworking larder, a stone worktop named for the Cornish coast it sits above, and enough thought given to the wiring that it can grow with the household in years to come.
