Boot Room and Library, Newlyn

A large wooden bookshelf with multiple compartments, some containing books and framed photos, set against a light-colored wall and a herringbone wood floor.

This project brought two connected spaces together under one roofline in Newlyn: a boot room fitted into a sloped ceiling, and a full height library built as a single piece of joinery along an entire wall.‍

In the boot room, base units and wall units in Dijon Walnut are paired with door and panel fronts veneered in Crown Cut European Oak, edged in solid oak and finished with a routed handle. The tallest doors are cut on an angle to follow the pitch of the ceiling, with a half height routed handle set to one side so the doors still open cleanly despite the slope. A run of open shelving and a small display niche break up the run of closed doors, giving the room somewhere to put things down as well as away.‍

The library is built as a single wall of oak veneered joinery, floor to ceiling, mixing open cubes of varying sizes with a run of drawers and cupboards along the bottom. Every panel, from the tall end panels down to the smallest shelf, is in the same oak veneer with solid edging, left unfinished for oiling on site once fitted. Drawer and door fronts below are fitted with a central pull routed into the top edge, keeping the same handle free look as the boot room above. Cabinetry behind the scenes is built in Oak, with Blum soft close hinges and drawers throughout.

Both spaces share the same construction standard as every Meadows kitchen: Blum Onyx soft close hinges and LegraBox drawers, high quality units and doors, so the fitted joinery performs as well as it looks.
