Abbey Meadow, Lelant
This bespoke kitchen at Abbey Meadow in Lelant, a short distance from St Ives, hides something most visitors would never notice: a full height door built directly into the run of cabinetry, disguised among the surrounding units until it swings open to reveal a walk through to the rest of the house.
As with every kitchen we design and build, the doors are hand made rather than bought in. Each is a slab veneer door in crown cut European oak, 22mm thick with 5mm solid oak edging, book matched along the vertical grain, and finished with a routed J-Pull handle throughout, except the walk through door itself, which is left without a handle so it reads as a continuous panel rather than an obvious door. Built almost two metres tall, it is reinforced with a strengthening bar, extra wide throw hinges, and a recessed plinth holder to carry its own weight invisibly. Three fluted glass doors, handleless and framed, break up the run elsewhere and let light filter through.
Cabinet carcasses are built in Egger's Natural Hamilton Oak, with Blum Onyx soft close hinges and Blum LegraBox soft close drawers throughout. The kitchen is built for serious cooking: two separate oven and microwave housings, a dedicated wine fridge, and a larder unit all sit within the run.
The worktop is Duke Stone's Lamorna, a genuinely substantial 60mm thick quartz surface, fully templated and fitted with a complete set of cut outs for the tap, sink, hob and drainage.
At the sink, a Blanco SilGranit sink in white is paired with a Quooker Fusion Round tap in black, drawing filtered boiling water from the Pro3 tank fitted below. Cooking is handled by a genuinely comprehensive Samsung suite: a 76 litre Catalytic Clean oven, a 50 litre combination oven, microwave and grill with steam clean, a warming drawer, and an 83cm Infinite combi venting hob with a 645 cubic metre an hour boost extraction built directly into the unit. A Samsung fridge freezer, dishwasher and a separate 18 bottle wine fridge complete the appliance run.
The result is a kitchen built for a household that genuinely cooks, with one quietly remarkable piece of joinery hidden in plain sight: a two metre door built to carry its own weight and disappear into the run around it.
